Saturday in the Thurlow Nunn League

On a rare Saturday without cup games getting in the way of league football Stowmarket Town moved another point clear at the top of the Premier Division with an impressive 3-0 away win completing the double over Stanway Rovers. With Wroxham’s fixture at Godmanchester Rovers falling to a waterlogged pitch Newmarket Town took the opportunity to move into second place after a close 4-3 win at Thetford Town. Norwich United are up to fifth after trouncing Haverhill Rovers 5-0.

It’s getting tight at the other end of of the Premier Division with both bottom sides picking up 3 points. An 89th minute 30 yarder from Kyle Cassell took Hadleigh United to a 3-2 win over Walsham le Willows, while a brace from Connor Ingram helped Gorleston to a 3-1 victory against FC Clacton. Ely City suffered a fourth successive defeat, 1-0 at Woodbridge Town.

Mulbarton Wanderers replaced Downham Town at the top of First Division North with a Tom Amis hat trick helping them defeat visitors Cornard United 4-1. Downham’s Friday night match away to King’s Lynn Town Reserves had been postponed owing to a watertlogged pitch at Wisbech. Third placed Lakenheath led 2-0 and 4-2 at Leiston Reserves but eventually lost 5-4. Meanwhile March Town United and Norwich CBS swapped 4th and 5th places following the Cambridgeshire side’s 2-0 home success.

There were some interesting results in First Division South! Leaders Lopes Tavares suffered only their second league defeat of the season after visiting Wivenhoe Town overcame a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3! Second placed Little Oakley also overcame a half time deficit. They were 1-0 down at home to White Ensign but a Harry Mann hat trick saw them win 4-1.

There was also a hat trick at Benfleet where Chris Harris netted three times in third placed Halstead Town‘s stunning 8-1 success. Fifth placed Frenford had their 7th successive victory on Friday evening, beating Holland 3-1. May & Baker were another Friday night winner, beating Wormley Rovers 2-0. Coggeshall United are moving up the table with Khris Oti scoring 5 in the 9-0 win over bottom side Fire United. Finally a mention for Newbury Forest after they secured their first win of the season – 3-1 at home to Burnham Ramblers.
